GORE-TEX shoes - Tips for cleaning

GORE-TEX footwear is robust, waterproof and breathable. In order for the shoes to retain their function, they should be cleaned and cared for properly on a regular basis.

How do I care for my GORE-TEX shoes properly?

The GORE-TEX membrane incorporated into the lining is windproof, waterproof, but on the other hand, also permeable to water vapour and therefore breathable. With shoes that have a GORE-TEX construction, it’s important that care products don’t limit this functioning. Therefore, the use of products with a high fat or oil content is not advisable, as these hinder the breathability of the outer material.

The Dos & Don'ts for GORE-TEX footwear

To ensure that you enjoy your GORE-TEX shoes for as long as possible, please note the following:

  • Don’t put them in the washing machine. GORE-TEX materials consist of a membrane with very small pores. If you put a shoe with a GORE-TEX finish in the washing machine, it can be destroyed and the shoe will no longer be waterproof.
  • For proper cleaning it’s best to use lukewarm water and a brush for leather shoes or a sponge for textile shoes
  • To ensure a comfortable climate for the foot, the choice of socks is also crucial. Synthetic fibre socks quickly transfer moisture and should therefore always be preferred. Cotton, on the other hand, retains moisture, which promotes the formation of blisters.
  • GORE-TEX shoes come with a water-repellent finish when you buy them. It is therefore not necessary to impregnate a new shoe.
  • Thanks to the waterproof function of the GORE-TEX membrane incorporated between the upper material and the inner lining, it’s basically not necessary to impregnate the shoes. However, to protect and care for the uppers, the shoes should be cleaned regularly and maintained with a  waterproofing spray. The spray should be applied at a distance of 30 cm from the shoe - but please always outdoors. Then leave the shoes to dry for approx. 15 minutes. To avoid impairing the breathability of the upper material, you should generally avoid products containing oil or grease.
  • When impregnating, make sure that the leather doesn’t become more than slightly damp and that no drops form. Please also note our tips on waterproofing shoes.

By the way, a good alternative to conventional impregnation sprays is an impregnation cream that you dab on or an impregnation foam. This is a good alternative for allergy sufferers and all those who can’t spray outdoors.
