In addition to lightness, comfort and timelessly beautiful design, sustainable production is one of the most important criteria that every shoe in our collection must fulfil. With our Eco Agenda, we focus on the socially fair and environmentally friendly production of our shoes - along the entire value chain.
From the careful selection of materials tested for harmful substances to environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and the guarantee of socially fair production conditions, these principles are integrated into every step of our shoe production.
We rely on strong partnerships and sustainable initiatives to make a positive contribution to the environment and society together.
We produce sustainably - from design to manufacture. We calculate the CO2 footprint of each individual shoe as early as the design phase.
We attach great importance to the quality and sustainability of our materials. Our shoes are made from sustainable materials and tested for harmful substances in accredited laboratories.
We find that the more companies that participate in established initiatives, the more impact we have on the way to a sustainable future. And that’s why we’re involved in a number of important initiatives:
We have set up an environmental management system at our own sites and are EMAS or ISO14001 certified. Our co-operation partners must meet the strict requirements of our Code of Conduct in order to work according to our ecological and social standards.
We avoid intermediaries and work directly with our suppliers. We evaluate them regularly to ensure maximum transparency and the highest quality.
Our collections comprise an average of 500 items. In order to reduce our carbon footprint in a targeted manner, we have set up our own eco database as a further measure, which calculates this for us from data on ingredients, material consumption, environmental factors such as CO², water, chemical and resource consumption.
Our eco-database was honoured with the Environmental Management Award for Climate Protection in 2022. This was followed in 2023 by the German Innovation Award in the ‘Business to Business - Information Technologies’ category.
We work primarily with leather suppliers that are certified with gold and silver by the Leather Working Group (LWG) to ensure environmental protection. In addition, some of our shoes have been awarded the Blue Angel, an important recognition for environmental and health protection.
Our leather linings and removable leather insoles are tanned chrome-free and meet the strict quality guidelines of our VIOS® research platform for the development of sustainable materials.
VIOS was established back in 2013. The word VIOS is derived from the Greek term BIOS and the Latin terms VIVO and VIA: Nature, life, way. With VIOS, we take a holistic and scientifically sound approach to sustainability. To this end, we have created our own standard with the VIOS Restricted Substance List: It sets far higher threshold requirements than those prescribed by law or quality labels.
Material left over from the production of our TANARO Group outsoles is recycled in our production process. On average, this can save up to 23% of the sole material. This not only reduces the amount of waste, but also the need for raw materials. In one season, we save as much material as 6 mid-range cars weigh.
The TANARO lining consists of 70% recycled polyester fibres. The use of recycled materials reduces the amount of raw materials required in production and thus improves the eco-balance of our shoes. In one season, we save as much CO2 as a flight from Vienna to India.
MONTA uses sustainable terracare® leather from Germany for its upper material. It is produced in a particularly environmentally friendly way thanks to reduced energy and water consumption. Compared to conventional leather, the use of terracare® leather in this group saves around 155 bathtubs full of water.
The TANARO uses eyelets made from 30% recycled polyamide. The use of recycled materials reduces the amount of raw materials required in production and thus improves the eco-balance of our shoes. In one season, we save as much CO2 as the production of a smartphone.
